There is a lot of war metal (Profane Order, Pig's Blood, Hatevömit) in these last times on Timpani allo Spiedo 'zine, and today I keep on reviewing releases of this kind with this fantastic 4-way split entitled "Scorn Coalescence" that I received through Qabar Extreme Music PR. Released by the Indian label Cyclopean Eye Productions, it see an unholy and destructive alliance between two entities coming from Sri Lanka (Serpents Athirst and Genocide Shrines) and other two coming instead from New Zealand (Trepanation and Heresiarch), a small country very known for these particular sonorities. Each of them presents here an exclusive track for this split, except for Genocide Shrines, whose "All and/or Nothing" was previously released in some recent live albums. And be sure that each of them is perfect to destroy completely your ears, and the nicer thing is that this split, as you'll see soon, becomes sicker song after song!
"Scorn Coalescence" starts with the Sri Lankan side through Serpents Athirst. Born in 2011, I knew of their blasphemous existence in 2015, when the same Cyclopean Eye Prod, along with the Irish label Invictus Productions, spewed forth their "Heralding Ceremonial Mass Obliteration" EP. Well, their song into this split is called "Poisoning the Seven", that shows an obsessive and blasting black/death metal (more black than death, to say the truth), containing, besides an intro with militaristic drums, a great performance full of hateful screams by the singer Reverend Khaostorm. This is only the beginning... but what a fukken beginning!
The massacre continues with Genocide Shrines. Born in 2011, too, and strong of a debut album published in 2015 by the same Cyclopean Eye Prod, this band, whose drummer plays also the guitar in Serpents Athirst, is somehow very particular since their lyrical themes, that mixes war metal topics with some religious suggestions taken from their land. Also their sound is a bit particular, as perfectly exemplified by "All and/or Nothing", that's the longer song of the split since its 8 minutes circa of lenght. In comparison to the Serpents Athirst's "Poisoning the Seven", it's more death metal-oriented (also as for the growling vocals) and is well dynamic so to range from parts in blast-beat to an abyssic, doomish sequence in the middle where there are not only riffs with a somehow oriental flavour but even some curious atmospheric sounds in the background. There is need to say that the general result is very intriguing, even though both Serpents Athirst and Genocide Shrines can't be easily described as bestial black/death metal bands in a strict sense, also because their songs are well produced and listenable.
Instead, the true bestial black/death metal sounds of the split starts with the New Zealand side through Trepanation. I've to say that their "B/H/T" amazed me a lot thanks to a bestial and grinding assault made more ferocious by a fantastic alternation between growls and demented screams, and also made more incredibly sick by a disturbing and constant sort of feedback, so the band is even a bit experimental in a way that can remind me of Tetragrammacide. In practice, Trepanation, that are still without full-lenght albums since their foundation in 2012, are really good at combining the classic side of the bestial black/death metal genre with its more experimental side influenced by power electronics.
And, to end the split with the fireworks, now it's the turn of Heresiarch, surely the most experienced and known band of the entire pack, and already reviewed on these pages for their "Incursions" compilation. The 6-minute "Dread Prophecy" is without any doubts THE most typical bestial black/death metal track of "Scorn Coalescence" since it's so fast, chaotic and cavernous as it should be while its end is fantastic because it is characterized by a doom sequence very useful to drown the listeners in a sea of agony and anguish. I think that, maybe, the sound is sometimes too chaotic (for example, some riffs are practically undecipherable) because of a very raw production but, fuck that, this is war metal, not pop music canned for the lobotomized masses!

In conclusion, "Scorn Coalescence", while we are waiting for more consistent releases by each of the bands into this split, is a must have for every war metal maniac worthy of this name and, of the 4 bands, I must confess that I liked especially Trepanation (that in 2018 toured in New Zealand even with Bölzer!) since they are really sick like few others. What can I say more? Nothing, so I think that you must start to listen to these 22 minutes of "campaign for musical destruction", and I am sure that they will not disappoint you!
