Hey brutal bangers,
in these last days there is an enormous dose of episodes of "Honorable Mentions from the Abyss" like never before, so welcome to the newer episode of this column, that this time is completely dedicated to the death metal genre.
What awaits you is a selection of death metal bands coming from Italy, to Australia, that usually conceive their genre of reference with a lot of violence but without forgetting to create some dark or somehow bizzarre atmospheres, as you'll see soon.
DEFECHATE - "OVERTHROWN INTO OBLIVION"
AD VITAM INFERNAL - "INFERNAL COMEDY"
The French duo Ad Vitam Infernal (FB page) is so ambitious that they made an infernal version of the Dante's "Divine Comedy"! In fact, their debut album, released in January 2020 by the Czech label Lavadome Productions, is called "Infernal Comedy" and lyrically, instead of telling the journey of Dante into the Hell, it usually tells the stories and the torments of the damned in according to their own points of view. Some damned are very illustrious since "God Shall Take Your Hands" is focused on the sanguinary Spanish inquisitor Torquemada while the main character of the closing song "Insane Prayer" is none other than... Dante himself! Musically, all these atrocities come into the form of a violent death metal à la Morbid Angel/Deicide with some dark tunes and black metal influences throughout this concept-album. Also Ad Vitam Infernal use a drum-machine but, this time, the effect is good and aggressive... even though a human drummer is ALWAYS the best option for me haha! Joking aside, we are talking about a band that deserves a lot, so don't miss this "Infernal Comedy"... and let Lucifer eat you again and again for his delight!
TZUN TZU - "THE FORBIDDEN CITY"
Sun Tzu was a Chinese military general and philosopher that, living probably between the VI and V century BC, is better known for his "The Art of War", a famous work of military strategy. Well, there is a band in the far far Australia that in 2003 decided to name themselves as Tzun Tzu (FB page). They decided also to face particular themes about the ancient Japan and its history and, as for the music, they chose to play death metal or, better, "Ancient Oriental Death Metal", as they love to dub their style. It is exemplified at its best in "The Forbidden City", their new and 6th EP (yes, they published almost ONLY EPs throughout their career!), released by Lavadome Prod. "Forbidden City" is formed by 3 tracks: the new titletrack and two old songs re-recorded for the occasion, that are "Kunoichi" (after a sort of female version of the ninjas) and "Ko'Muso" (after a group of mendicant monks born in 1600 circa). In synthesis, their "Ancient Oriental Death Metal" is a furious death metal characterized by very low growls, nice technical skills as shown by awesome guitar solos, and "Japanese" parts made with the synths. All this creates a slab of death metal that isn't common out there, so I can't wait for their upcoming second full lenght album!
