Honorable Mentions from the Abyss #31: Grid/Sanity Control/Antipathic/Diabolic Oath

Hey brutal bangers,
I received a lot of stuff in these last months and I am "forced" to talk about many releases in a fast way, so here you are another episode with "Honorable Mentions from the Abyss"!
I advise you that this new episode, as you will see soon, starts violently and closes even ultra-violently, so I suggest you to be very prepared this time!
Well, are you ready? Yes or not, LET'S GO!!!

GRID - "LIVSLEDA"

This new episode of "Honorable Mentions from the Abyss" starts already with extreme violence thanks to Grid (FB page), a Swedish three-piece that this year released their debut album "Livsleda" through Selfmadegod Records. They come from Umeå, whose hardcore punk scene is very strong due to bands like Refused or Doughnuts, and these Grid keep high the Umeå hardcore reputation. Basically, they play a creative grindcore able to be not only ultra-violent as it should be but also very dynamic also because of not so common (for the genre, at least) influences. In fact, if death metal, hardcore punk and crust/d-beat are regular for every grindcore band worthy of this name, Grid made it more unpredictable and interesting with black metal influences here and there and also with some melodic hooks, as shown especially in the titletrack of "Livsleda", that is a sort of instrumental having even atmospheric passages. In brief, "Livsleda" is grindcore but also something more without being experimental!

SANITY CONTROL - "WAR ON LIFE"

Another short debut full lenght and another massacre! This time you are going to know the existence of Sanity Control (FB page), 4 thrash maniacs from Warsaw, Poland, whose "War on Life" was released this year by Seeing Red Records along with Selfmadegod Rec. A hammering thrash metal with some hardcore punk tunes and with lyrics focused on social issues is what you can expect. The style of this band, that loves also the mosh parts (exemplified at their best in the mid-tempo song "Rope") is simple, a bit predictable and usually without guitar solos of any sort but, anyway, it's intense and genuine in the right way. In addition, Sanity Control play very similarly to Injury Broadcast, an Italian band coming from my city, Rome, so I can say I feel quite at home when I listen to Sanity Control haha!

ANTIPATHIC - "COVERED WITH RUST"

Now it's time to talk about a self-released EP I received during the fukken quarantine: "Covered with Rust" by Antipathic (FB page). For you, what could be the style played by this US/Italian duo, judging by a cover artwork clearly paying homage to the Cannibal Corpse's "Butchered at Birth"? YES, it's US brutal death metal, nothing more, nothing less! It's played sometimes with thrash metal riffs, tongue-twisting vocals and with some slamming parts (and you know I'm not so into the slamming brutal death...), with the addition of a sick mood. Unfortunately, I don't like so much the general result because, for example, of weak drums that seem to be a drum-machine. Anyway, the EP contains the participation of the guest singer Bob Hodgins (Human Repentance) in "Inexorable Hierarchy" and also the presence of two covers: "Don't Care" by Obituary and "Covered with Sores" by the same Cannibal Corpse, both respectively entitled "IDGAF" and "Covered with Rust". But what is the sense of these title changes?

DIABOLIC OATH - "PROFANE DEATH EXODUS"

Closing the circle, this episode of "Honorable Mentions from the Abyss" ends with a more extreme, almost excessive, violence thanks to "Profane Death Exodus", the debut album of Diabolic Oath (FB page), a US trio coming from the very vital scene of Portland, Oregon (Ritual Necromancy, Shroud of the Heretic, Weregoat, and the list could continues endlessly!). Released by Sentient Ruin Laboratories, "Profane Death Exodus" is a strange creature which starts from a bestial black/death metal formula to create something very abominable, dissonant and oppressive but also able to be dynamic and a lot violent. And you have to think that this album is closed by a monumental track like "Chalice of Conquering Blood", a 10-minute tour de force of rare proportions! Combining Teitanblood, Necroblood and Revenge in a single deadly solution, "Profane Death Exodus" is the new strike of a label of the calibre of Sentient Ruin Lab, which rarely miss a beat!
