Honorable Mentions from the Abyss #29: Horrocious/Zifir/Fulci/Escuela Grind

Hey brutal bangers,
this is a short and sharp appointment with "Honorable Mentions from the Abyss"!
I have to admit that I've got an inferno of releases to talk about, and not always I have the time to write a proper review about them. In fact, today it's the turn of albums I have their digital promos since many months... if not even since one year!
So, I'll present you some nice bands ranging from the most brutal black metal to grindcore. I am fukken sure that each of them will be to your insatiable satisfaction!
ENJOY THE ARTICLE!

HORROCIOUS - "DEPLETED LIGHT AND THE DEATH OF UNIQUENESS"

Including members from Persecutory, Sarinvomit and Eggs of Gomorrh, Horrocious (FB page), from Turkey, released last year their debut album "Depleted Light and the Death of Uniqueness" under the auspices of Osmose Productions. This album is a 8-track pure massacre devoted to a ultra-fast and brutal black metal in the Swedish way. To say the truth, it's not very different from the black metal played by Sarinvomit but it has more dark tunes. Anyway, if you want a merciless machine gun fire sound into your broken ears for 46 fukken minutes with few breaks, well, I think that Horrocious are very fit for you!

ZIFIR - "DEMONIAC ETHICS"

After "Kingdom of Nothingness", the trio Zifir (from Turkey, too), that I included in "Come on, burn my ears #4", continues to create nightmares of rare quality with their 4th album "Demoniac Ethics" (Duplicate Records, 2020). Their sound is essentially the same but it remains incredibly effective and also quite original for me. Specifically, theirs is a black metal that is freezing, hypnotic, ritualistic, often slow and sometimes chaotic, and this time there are also blast-beats here and there! If you are into the Norwegian black metal with references to Darkthrone and Burzum but played with a personal touch, I think that it will be easy for you to be possessed by Zifir (FB page)!

FULCI - "TROPICAL SUN"

For you, what could be the sound of a band whose second opus "Tropical Sun "(Time to Kill Records, 2019) is a concept-album based on "Zombi 2" (1979), an Italian horror movie directed by Lucio Fulci, a name very familiar to every self-respecting horror movie maniac? Well, this Italian trio just called Fulci (FB page), that I featured into "Come on, burn my ears! #9", plays through the 14 tracks (4 of them are instrumental, included a Fabio Frizzi cover taken from the movie) of "Tropical Sun", that I received from Anubi Press, a simple and direct US brutal death metal. The sound isn't very violent because, for example, of some slamming moments here and there but, fortunately (you know, I am not so much into slamming brutal death!), there is a good variety throughout the album also thanks to thrash metal hints. Now, there is need to say that in March of 2020, so in full quarantine, Fulci released a new single entitled "Death by Metal" that isn't a Death cover but a sort of rapping death metal experimentation with Italian guests as Metal Carter (a famous rapper from my city, Rome) and the HC punk band Face Your Enemy. And in these last times this gory trio is recording new stuff. Will be it about another cult movie directed by Lucio Fulci?

ESCUELA GRIND - "INDOCTRINATION"

This US band, that I already presented you through "Come on, burn my ears! #9", was supposed to play in the Obscene Extreme Fest 2020 but, due to this fuckin' Coronavirus, every plan to do it is off. At least, we can listen to "Indoctrination" (Armageddon Label, 2020), the debut album of Escuela Grind (FB page), a quartet (now a trio with the recent departure of their bassplayer) playing a neurotic and ultra-dynamic grindcore influenced by other genres such as hardcore punk, power violence and death metal. Characterized by intelligent lyrics spewed forth by Katerina with her barking vocals and dealing, indeed, with the indoctrination and the ways in which abstract ideas can affect our life, this 17-track album includes even a song lasting... almost 10 minutes! And this in an album that essentially is into grindcore!
