When firstly Flavio asked me to review a death metal band, I was a bit skeptical, because it is true that I do like metal, even if I’m only recently deepening these genre. But I’m too curious to say no to seize the opportunity to delve into new genres and subgenres. So I’ve accepted the challenge and I tempted fate, like Ulysses’ voyage past the Pillars of Hercules!
Did I end up in Dante’s Inferno? I’m not sure, since when I firstly listened to the Necrofili, the band I’m about to talk to you about, I thought I was burning in flames, as Ulysses does. In a positive way, of course!
But now, let’s focus on the band!
The Necrofili (do you know the etymology of the word? It comes from Ancient Greek, νεκρός, nekrós, that means "corpse", and -philia, also from Ancient Greek φιλία, philía, that means "affection") [In brief, Necrofili is the Italian word for "necrophiles". - Flavio] is a death/thrash metal band from Rieti, a village in the center of Italy, and they’ve started playing in 2005.
As I said before, their sound is pure death metal, like the Death or the Carcass, combined with thrash metal (like the Slayer) and at some level, we can also find a few melodic lines.
The first song that I’ve listened to is called "Infaithcted", the second track of their latest self-released EP, "Immaculate Preconception".
The album is made up of five songs. The first one, "A Lullaby for Reason", is the shortest and it is instrumental. The overall sound is soft and sweet, underlined by a guitar riff that recalls a lullaby. But this is just the beginning! The contrast beween the intro and the second track is steep as a slope; in fact, "Infaithcted" is a brutal mix of death and thrash metal. It is said that beauty is in simplicity, and I couldn’t agree more. Although the sound is pure old-school thrash metal, they managed to create an enthralling, powerful song, with a hammering sound. Moreover, the voice reminds me of the Carcass singer’s voice. The lyrics of the song are decadent, they talk about an infection that affects a person from the moment that he or she is born. And there’s no escape from this fate. Since the song’s title is "Infaithcted", we could guess that there’s a clear reference to religion. But because it isn’t said in the lyrics, we can interpret it as we want! That’s the beauty of art!
The third song is called "Campo de’ Fiori", and it is sang in Italian. It talks about the execution of Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher who was burned alive in that square in 1600, because he was charged with heresy by the Church (I suggest you to read his brilliant final speech to his devotees, just before his death).
The song starts with a melodic riff, brutally interrupted by a heavy drums. The rhythm is slow combined with a heartbreaking voice.
The fourth song, "The Shapeless Thing", has a soft intro, but then it explodes, the speed increases and it breaks out in a desperate, disturbing sound.
The fifth and last song, "Army of the Reaper", is a tribute to death and his army “black in mind”, ready to make more victims. The song starts with a slow melodic guitar solo, with an arpeggiated riff, alternated with a more violent voice. When I first listened to it I thought about a mix between a classic heavy metal sound like the Iron Maiden and thrash metal.
This band is so interesting, starting from their sound, and then continue with their lyrics and their various influences.
You should absolutely check this album out, and intensively savour it!
Also because the album cover is so dreadfully beautiful!
So, listen to "Immaculate Preconception" and let me know what you think!
See you soon, brutal people!
