In these last days I am giving a lot of space to the Polish extreme metal scene, and also this review isn't an exception to this recent trend. In particular, behind the absurd moniker of Angrrsth, there are 4 black metal maniacs from Poland that released digitally their debut EP "Znikąd" on April 2018. Some months later, Godz ov War Productions was so thrilled by the skills of Angrrsth to re-release their EP in a physical format (in CD, specifically), that I have in my hands thanks to the boss of the label. And there's something more to say: the new edition of "Znikąd" contains a bonus track in addition to the 4 original songs, so you have one more reason to buy it.
Now, the band, that sings in Polish as Apatheia, dubs their style as "black/death metal". But, as you'll see soon, there are very few death metal elements throughout this disc, that shows mainly black metal without any doubts. Said this, the EP consist of 5 tracks in which there is a style well balanced between fast and slower tempos (comprising also some doom passages from time to time). And you can say the same about the alternation between the wicked parts and the most melodic ones, even though these last ones are maybe more predominant.
Surely, the EP is characterized by a notable variety, that is already determined by a singer such as Hermann, who is really able to pass through different types of vocals, included an howling in the closing "Nad Głową Sznur". But speaking about the single songs, I can mention the clear death metal influences of "I kopyt słyszę stuk", the melancholic acoustic parts of "Upadłem", and the impressive furious passages with freezing riffs of "Siarka i kwas", that's the most violent number in the list, so, also simply for this detail, it's my favorite one. Instead, the aforementioned "Nad Głową Sznur" represent a sort of fish out of water since it shows groovy mid-tempos with somehow rockish tunes, some doomish parts, and a conclusion with surprising heavy metal vibes. At this point, no surprise that this bonus track, so different in comparison with the other ones but always characterized by a sulfurous sense of melody, wasn't originally in the tracklist.
As you can see, "Znikąd" offers a black metal sound able to attract the attention of the listeners because of a nice variety, and also of a quite personal style. Maybe, the band have to be more dynamic since they repeat too much some passages without offering important variations (like in the conclusion of "Nad Głową Sznur"). In addition, I would like to hear from them more ultra-fast tempos because these ones kick a lot of asses when they are in "Siarka i kwas"! Anyway, this is a promising debut EP for a band that is playing now a good amount of gigs. For example, they will be part of the Brutal East Festival XI (Białystok, Poland, 12th April 2019) in which they'll open for nothing else than the grindsters Antigama!
