Slamming brutal death metal...I confess: I never liked so much this sub-genre. Why? Because, for my broken ears, it has too slow parts and also too generic riffs, so, as a fan of the pure pure speed aggression, I think I'll always prefer the most violent and hysterical forms of brutal death metal. Unfortunately, this Polish band called Fetor, that recently released a live album which shows pure slam starting from its title, isn't an exception for me.
Released by Mythrone Promotion in cooperation with Infernum Media and captured from a live performance at the Grind 'Em All Fest on 24th October 2015 (if I say right, the last edition of this Polish Fest was taken just in that year), "No Poems Just Slam" shows a very simple and crude slamming brutal death. The approach choosen by Fetor is, indeed, "very simple", so expect few tempo changes and a riffing that admit no melodies, no complex nor bizarre solutions, and no solos, and all this into songs that last often only 2 minutes and a little more. In addition, the singer Ojciec respect the classic vocalization of this genre by using the usual sample set composed of pig squeals, some deep growls and rare scream.
Unfortunately, there are no surprises nor memorable moments here, so every song is incredibly linear and predictable. Anyway, I have to say I appreciate a lot the blasting part (surely, the most violent one in the album) of "At the Cradle of Judas", the last song in the list before playing the encore of "From Neck to Crotch", that's one of the faster numbers while the slower one is "Show Me What You Have Got Inside" (what a great title!). Another appreciable thing comes from the production, which is very decent and listenable for a live album of this kind. Plus, the recording seem to be really natural and without changes during the production stage, so this is remarkable.
No long review, no poem for an album that is called "No Poems Just Slam". I was not so much impressed by this live album, even though it has some good moments (especially in the faster ones, obviously!) but without being seriously amazing also since my initial considerations about the slamming brutal death. So, I think it deserve surely attentions from the fans of bands like Devourment, Vulvectomy and Kraanium but, said frankly, I prefer more demented stuff like Cenotaph or Suicidal Causticity. Now, I need to say two more things: 1) Fetor, that in 2016 released their debut album "Abandoned Hope" (Rotten Music), has finally a stable bassplayer in the person of Beton while, 3 years ago, they have a session bassist known as Biskup; 2) one year ago circa, Fetor shared the stage with the mighty Corpsefucking Art, a brutal death metal band from my city, Rome, whose new album "Splatterphobia" will be reviewed on these pages in the next days to come. So, stay tuned for another brutal death metal massacre!
