Mascharat - "Ars Aurea Mortis" (Remparts Productions, 2026)

È sempre bello quando un gruppo mi ricontatta, anche dopo anni, per inviarmi il suo nuovo materiale. È questo il caso dei milanesi Mascharat, che a gennaio sono usciti con un nuovo album, "Ars Aurea Mortis", pubblicato a una distanza di ben 9 anni dal debutto, recensito proprio su queste paginette con al seguito una bella intervista a questa misteriosa band. Perché sì, passano gli anni ma dei Mascharat ancora si sa piuttosto poco, in primis i loro volti, visto anche che non suonano praticamente mai dal vivo, rimanendo quindi di base una studio band. Però in loro niente è fondamentalmente cambiato, dalla musica a dei concept articolati e impegnativi che ruotano intorno alle maschere del carnevale veneziano e al suo folklore. E, ovviamente, anche "Ars Aurea Mortis", solo il secondo album di un'avventura iniziata nell'ormai lontano 2010, non fa decisamente eccezione. Ma una cosa che è cambiata in realtà c'è: l'etichetta. Se infatti l'album omonimo uscì per conto dell'australiana Seance Records, il nuovo per la francese Remparts Productions, label nata nel 2022 e totalmente specializzata nel black metal ma senza porsi barriere di sorta, andando così da quello avanguardistico a quello più tradizionale.

I don't know who is behind the mysterious Italian band Mascharat but I know that the Aussie label Seance Records have did a good deal to release their debut album with the same name! I am saying this not only for the quality of music but also because the album is strongly Italian in its entirety. In fact, "Mascharat" is a concept album about the story of a man that repudiates his Christian convictions and values in order to search the Truth with the "help" of three joking and cruel masks of the Venetian Carnival tradition (it isn't a case if "Mascharat" means "joke" or "prank" in Arabic but it is also similar to the Italian word for "mask" that is "maschera"!). All this story is sang in Italian as well in a Northern Italy dialect and even in French (in "Medecin de Peste", at least) through 9 tracks (4 of them are instrumental, included intro and outro), in which there is a sound dubbed by the label as "Renaissance Black Metal", in according to the particular lyrics.
