Evilcult - "Triumph of Evil" (Awakening Records, 2025)

Lo sapete, io ho un debole per il metalpunk brasiliano. Stress, Sepultura (i primissimi, non le mezze seghe che tanti conoscono oggi), Sarcófago, Dorsal Atlantica, Brigada do Odio, Olho Seco, Coléra, Ratos de Porão e tanti altri rappresentano una fra le scene estreme nazionali più prolifiche e talentuose di sempre, e il bello è che il Brasile sforna ancora oggi un'infinità di gruppi fighi, metal o punk non fa differenza. Ho quindi sempre delle aspettative altissime verso le band di questo Paese, e questa che mi sto accingendo a recensire non fa ovviamente eccezione. Ma devo dire fin da subito che gli Evilcult queste aspettative non è che le abbiano solo mantenute, anzi, le hanno proprio superate, anche perché dalla copertina mi aspettavo qualcosa di molto più tipicamente "brasiliano" in stile Sarcófago, e invece si tratta di qualcosa di diverso, seppur comunque sempre radicato negli anni '80. Ed è diverso anche grazie al fatto che "Triumph of Evil", terzo album degli Evilcult, sia stato rilasciato non dalla solita Cogumelo Records, che tanti capolavori di metal brasiliano ha tirato fuori, ma da un'ultra-esotica label, la cinese Awakening Records, nata nel 2018 per volere di tal Li Meng degli Ancestor. Insomma, dal Brasile alla Cina il passo non è mai stato così breve!

Paul Speckmann and the death metal music…you can say they are the same thing. In fact, Paul is one of the main icons of the entire death metal movement not only because he is the leader of the veterans Master but also because he lives death metal even since 1984 when he founded Deathstrike in a period where this genre hadn’t still well-precise borders. But, after Deathstrike, Paul founded other projects devoted completely to death metal so to range from the ephemeral Funeral Bitch to the long-lived Master through Abomination.

Among these death metal bands guided by Paul Speckmann, just Abomination have a crucial importance. They were a trio born in 1987 with a line-up initially consisted of the drummer Aaron Nickeas and the guitarist Mike Schaffer of Impulse Manslaughter (very soon substituted by the late lamented Dean Chioles). Achieved a contract with the German label Nuclear Blast after two demos, Abomination released their homonymous debut album on CD in 1990. And now the Czech label Doomentia Records has recently reissued “Abomination” on a vinyl version since his long collaboration with the same Paul Speckmann, that currently lives just in Czech Repubblic.

All Italian split for the Czech label Doomentia Records! In fact, it had the brilliant idea to unite in a sole production the Romans Morbo and the Sicilians Bunker 66, an old acquaintance of Timpani allo Spiedo when I interviewed even them with those very very long and boring questions that I did in the early days of the ‘zine. Well, this 4-song split is titled “Into the Morbid Bunker” and has released on 7’’ vinyl on 23^rd June 2016.
