Grimorium Verum - "Opus Delusion Intravenous" (2018)

Band: Grimorium Verum
Upcoming album: Opus Delusion Intravenous
Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Rating: 72/100

Have you ever been in Bangladesh? I am asking this to you because today we'll do a short but exciting journey into the Bengal extreme metal scene through a very interesting band. It's named Grimorium Verum after the notorious magical book with the same name. The story of this band is really tormented like in few other cases: in fact, they were founded in August 2009, and in the 2018 they finally released only in the Internet 4 new songs that don't form a real demo but will be included into their upcoming debut album titled "Opus Delusion Intravenous". This means that the cover artwork that you see above belongs to that album. Anyway, before these new tracks, Grimorium Verum only participated in two compilations titled "Metal Domination Vol. 1" (2010; the first compilation of all time focused on the Bengal bands) and the more international "Luxury of Pain" (2014), contributing, in each of them, with an only number. As you see, this is a very scarce discography but, at least, this quintet played in some local festivals throughout their still young career, so they gained a good underground reputation within their country with the result to be recognized as an important extreme metal band in the South Bangladesh. But now few bullshits and let's see how these 4 songs are good!

Firstly, they show a death metal a lot contaminated with black metal tunes, so this style can be considered also as black/death metal. As composers, I need to say that Grimorium Verum are surprisingly good since their songs are well structured, dynamic and even various in terms of atmosphere.

To make you understand better the songwriting abilities of the band, the tracks "My Fatal Brain's Deformity", with its 7 minutes circa of lenght, is so articulated and imaginative to represent already the style of the band, containing also some memorable rockish riffs; instead, "War at Nekad and Murtaad" is the most violent song due to its death metal à la Morbid Angel mixed with thrash metal vibes; "House of White Confession" mix brutality, black metal wickedness and melodic death metal tunes; as last, "Conjuration of the Promised Land" is very dark (including also some wicked arpeggios) but even melodic and despairing. And we mustn't forget to mention the engaging interaction between the two guitarplayers, that spew forth even some nice solso in every song (especially in "My Fatal Brain's Deformity").
At this point, everything seem to be perfect in the sound of Grimorium Verum, but it isn't so. For example, the drums are a bit flat since they sound like a drum-machine but, to say the truth, this doesn't influence so much the good quality of the music. Instead, more importantly, I consider the singer as the weaker link in Grimorium Verum because his vocal lines are anonymous and his growls (occasionally alternated with some screams) arenn't so effective also since they are incredibly low in the mix.

Despite the aforementioned flaws, I have been positively amazed by listening to these numbers that anticipate "Opus Delusion Intravenous". Especially, I like songs such as "My Fatal Brain's Deformity" and "War at Nekad and Murtaad", that's surely my favorite number. I think that Grimorium Verum, after many years in the ranks, have forged a sort of blackened death metal style that offer a mix between Behemoth and Morbid Angel blended with dark atmospheres and melodic despairation. So, I can't wait for their first full-lenght album, also since I believe that the band, considering their mature skills, is really ready for it! But, meanwhile, they are searching for a label interested to release the album, so wake up and sign them if you have a label, ok?
