INTERVISTA AI RAVEN!

E dopo tanto tempo, vi propongo finalmente una nuova intervista. E che intervista! Sì, perché quella che leggerete fra poco è l'intervista che ho fatto a John Gallagher, il chitarrista dei grandissimi Raven! Trattasi del mio gruppo metal preferito di sempre, ma anche del gruppo che ha anticipato di gran lunga tutto lo speed/thrash metal degli anni '80 insieme a Venom, Satan e ad altri. Questo mio amore verso i Raven in realtà non l'ho mai nascosto su queste pagine, ed è diventato più che mai palese qualche anno fa, nel 2018, quando pubblicai in 5 lunghe puntate la mia storia del proto-speed/thrash metal, poi stampata in versione cartacea in lingua italiana sul mio primo libro, "Benvenuti all'Inferno!". Ma il mio progetto sul proto-speed/thrash metal continua tuttora, sia aggiornando ogni tanto la mia infinita playlist riguardo il genere, sia intervistando, per l'appunto, gruppi che lo hanno marchiato per sempre come i Raven. E poi chissà, forse così ci scappa un altro mio libro? Ma basta ciarlare, e leggetevi quello che mi ha raccontato il buon John!

The story of Proto-Speed/Thrash metal - PART III

1982 was an important year for the future speed/thrash metal movement that emerged within few years. In fact, it was just during in 1982 that bands like Metallica, Slayer, Exodus and Sodom started their own careers releasing also devastating demos as "Power Metal" (Metallica) or the noisy and obscene "Witching Metal" (Sodom). And we don't forget the fundamental contribution to the emerging speed/thrash metal given by the first two volumes (both edited, indeed, in 1982) of Metal Massacre, a series of compilations, released by the soon-to-be-famous US label Metal Blade Records owned by Brian Slagel, in order to spread the music of North American bands like Metallica (with their very famous song "Hit the Lights", then appeared in their debut album "Kill 'Em All"), Armored Saint, Cirith Ungol and many others. Finally, 1982 was the year in which many bands started to love the speed and the pure sonic aggression revolting also the way to conceive the heavy metal music.

In my opinion, the first true proto-speed metal albums in the history were released in 1981. Yes, you have to count still them on the fingers of a single hand but the cult for the speed was already international at that time. In fact, it sounds strange but...Venezuela was one of the very first proto-speed metal strongholds!
